Fantagraphics Case Study:
Fantagraphics were originally founded in 1976, starting in Stanford, Connecticut before moves to Los Angeles and finally Seattle, Washington. Their letterhead states that they are the "publisher of the worlds greatest cartoonists" and they truly believe those words and taking it as a mission statement.
Ever since they started creating comics and art their only barrier of entry is they would only use the most talented cartoonists they could get. As a result of this, Fantagraphics release several comics that all differ in styles and subjects like Charlie Brown's Peanuts and comics by Richard Crumb. Both Cartoonists are brilliant and respected in their own right.
Their workplace and office is very messy and lawless as people can put up posters if they please to and leave folders around if it suits them. They all work in a house together as it helps create the informal feeling that they enjoy at Fantagraphics. The casual environment seems to lower stress levels. This easy-going home may stem from Gary Groth's huge dislike of the strict business offices he had to work at in his earlier years.
Fantagraphics' house of work contains huge amounts of storage for comics. This all ranges from fanzines to magazines all surrounding the sorting table. Peter Bagge mentions that fans who visit the building are often shocked at the state of the home, expecting to find something that resembles the professional company that they are.
